Fish-Market at Jimbaran
|
|
Impressions from Jimbaran with its harbour, its famous fish-market and a Sunset-Dinner at Jimbaran-Beach
with fresh grilled fish ... the best of Bali !!
Travel notes from Ulla and Rolf Mayer from Imsbach / Palatinate
|
|
During our visit to Bali in January 2005, we enjoyed several "highlights".
We were impressed by the countryside as well as by Bali's culture and cuisine. Together with our
seven friends from Palatinate, who accompanied us on this trip, we agreed that those "grilled
fish-specialities" at Jimbaran Beach with a nice sunset were for sure one of those
highlights.

Fishing Boats at the Beach of Jimbaran
|
|
South of Kuta and the airport of Bali there is a wide bay with white sand.
Near this surf- and swim beach of Jimbaran, a small fisher village,
you can find some of Bali's most luxury hotel resorts.
The northern half of this bay the Jimbaran fishing boats are at anchor.
This fleet with its mostly smaller boats, funny painted and with colourful sails shows busy activity.
Some boats leave, others come back and drop anchor near the beach.

Fishermen balancing their Catch
|
Rough looking fisherman are unloading big boxes with fish and many other sea animals.
They balance, bargain and sell their catch to lots of waiting customers.
On the big fish-market, right next to the beach, busy activity is going on since early morning.

|
Everything is fresh and stored on ice in boxes, side by side for sale.
The choices are huge. The smell of the fresh fish glides though the low halls.
Besides cleaning and filleting fish, sellers discuss prices with loud voices and discussions.

Everything is fresh and on Ice
|
|
|
South of the fish-market many grill huts on the beach become very crowded in the evening during sunset.
At least 14 of these little restaurants start grilling and backing fish and all other kind of sea animals.
Everything is fresh, most still alive. For the guests' choice they are kept in basins.

Dry coconut shells are burning and smoking as grill-coal in big barrels,
... dark clouds move through the sky, .... an appetite-creating smell.
The smell of fresh "Red Snapper", "Mahi Mahi" or "Cumi
Cumi"
reaches our nose.

Tables and chairs all over the beach till down to the sea.
A little further and everything gets toughed by the waves.
People are listening to the sound of the sea. They look around definitely impressed.
Candle lights on all tables, - it seems nearly along the whole bay -, create a romantic atmosphere.
Lights, spots and coloured lamps are reflected by the sea.
Our eyes look far around to the landing planes at Bali airport, that will bring new guests.

A Balinese music group accompanies with gamelan harmonies.
The great smell of the fish is a great sensation ...we have to come back here, ...very soon!
